PACE Love That Dress! Event Raises $120,000

September 13th, 2011

PACE Center for Girls, Inc. held its third Love That Dress! event on August 31, and raised $120,000 for the non-profit group. House of Wu is honored to have been part of this successful night through our donations of brand-new detailed and fashionable dresses for women to wear for special events, including homecoming dances, proms and weddings. PACE reports that $5,000 will be used towards opening a brand new center.

Not only were women able to gain discounted formal wear, but this was a great way for the community to get a taste of the creative talents of local designers. House of Wu has 12 lines of formal gowns and dresses for all ages, and we have been offering these to our community and beyond for over 20 years.

900 people attended this year’s event, which helped raise over $120,000 for PACE of Lee County. A majority of the money raised is linked to dress donations from designers, including those from House of Wu. In total, our company donated 50 prom and homecoming gowns to PACE for the event, as well as 22 new bridal dresses.

Exclusive designs of formal gowns from one of our elite prom dress lines, Hannah S, were included among the choices during the silent auction. Racks of lavish gowns and beautiful dresses lined the ballroom as event-goers from around the community shopped for a few hours during a silent auction in search of their perfect go-to pieces. Some of the PACE girls were even able to take part of the event so that they could secure the most beautiful gowns for this school year’s homecoming and prom dances.

PACE is an organization that helps teen girls ages 12 to 18 who face domestic and academic problems, or who have endured substance abuse. We regularly participate in this particular event, and we are pleased to know that the money raised every year goes to helping girls within our own community get back on the right track.

At the same time, we hope that all participants had a fabulous night out, whether they found their ideal gown or were inspired by the utmost in fashion. House of Wu’s exclusive designs feature the most delicate of details, to fashion-forward twists that retain their feminine appeal. Not only do we offer the most unforgettable gowns for weddings, but our formal dresses are available for all ages for your most special occasions.

Fall Colors Complement Elite Hannah S Homecoming Styles

September 2nd, 2011

Fall colors reflect the season: summer is over, and various foliages are turning into stunning earthy tones, such as red, orange and gold. Compared to summer colors, fall trends tend to be slightly more muted. For example, a bright purple worn during the summer can translate to that of an orchid tone during the fall. Choosing your color is just one part of the homecoming dress process. Since homecoming occurs in autumn, it is generally more fashionable to dress for the season. If certain colors don’t pique your interest, there are alternatives you can wear that are still appropriate for fall.

Dresses in brilliant gold and silver reflect the very essence of autumn. These tones also exude a formal aura for special events like homecoming. Certain styles of homecoming dresses, such as this strapless homecoming dress by Hannah S, feature hints of other fall colors throughout its details. To make your look more formal, try accessorizing with complementing colored accessories such as chains, earrings and broaches.

Red and purple are colors that are appropriate for a fall homecoming dance. The good news is that these two colors also flatter every complexion; therefore you can ensure that you will look your best in either tone, while
conforming to a traditional fall palette at the same time. For your best bet, choose a traditional lipstick red and an eggplant or royal purple dress. These tones represent fall the best, and will likely be the most flattering at a
homecoming dance.

It can be difficult to choose a fall dress if you don’t care for autumn colors. When all else fails, the little black homecoming dress is always the go-to choice. Black dresses with intricate features, such as this design by Hannah S, are appropriate for formal dances held during any time of the year. To keep your look from falling flat, add on funky accessories and don’t be afraid to wear bold makeup. Since homecoming is so close to Halloween, you will want to ensure that your look remains lively without being too dark.

There is a misconception that long gowns are exclusive to fall and winter, and shorter versions are more appropriate for spring and summer events. When it comes to homecoming dresses, it is appropriate to wear either length, so long as it fits your style. Long gowns tend to exude a more romantic look, while short gowns are more sassy and flirty. The length of your gown should also be appropriate according to your height and comfort level.

Prom Desses for a Theme without Sacrificing Personal Style

August 29th, 2011

Prom is undoubtedly one of the biggest nights of the year, and is an occasion in which you want to exude your ultimate style. Many prom dances have themes, such as “Midnight in Paris” “Retro Romance,” and “Caribbean Night.”  Although some prom-goers dress to a particular theme, this doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the gown you planned to wear so that you have to conform to a certain style. On the contrary, there are ways you can have fun with whichever theme your school chooses, all while maintaining your own high-fashion style.

Any theme with “romance” in the title is perhaps one of the easiest to dress for. Girls who prefer lots of flirty details in their prom dresses will fit right into the theme. Certain colors of gowns, such as pink, red and purple exude the most romance, compared to neutral ones. Layers of delicate materials and ruffles also complement a romantic theme. Both full-length and short prom dresses can be romantic. If you prefer more simple styles, try a different take on your hair style, or add more jewelry; these are different steps to make your look more feminine.

Accessories are one of the best ways to dress to a theme without changing the entire look of your dress. Gloves can add a more sophisticated look to any dress, and they also complement “Retro” themes well. Certain jewelry, headbands and shoes can be worn for various themes. For example, you can wear funky complementing pumps for a 70’s theme, or a fun headpiece for an 80’s dance. If your school decides to go with a tropical theme, simply wear a pretty flower in your hair. You can take simple steps that will go with a prom theme, but you don’t have to change your dress for it.

Unlike other types of occasions, it is best to choose your ultimate prom dress and then incorporate ways to fit into a particular theme. You want to show your personality and style, and not look like you are dressing for a Halloween party. This concept works whether you plan to wear a more classic style of dress, or a detailed and flirty version. If you don’t like your prom’s theme, then don’t worry about it. Stick with your beautiful gown and you will be stand out among all of the girls at the dance. Attempting to conform to a theme you are uncomfortable with will only look awkward.

How to Dress Your Bridesmaids

August 25th, 2011

You’ve seen it in movies.  You’ve heard the nightmarish stories.  You may have even been one of those bridesmaids forced to buy a hideous garment that you never wore again.  Don’t let history repeat itself.  Your bridal party is a reflection of you – the bride – and, as such, should compliment your look, without taking away from it.  That means the better your bridesmaids look, the better you look.

Plan your bridesmaids’ attire hassle-free with these handy tips:

  • Compliment, don’t imitate.  Make sure the bridesmaid dresses collaborate well with your gown without matching it exactly.  It’s also important that their looks not only compliment you, but your bridesmaids, of course!
  • Be budget-conscience.  Usually, bridesmaids buy their own dresses.  Try to stay within the typical range of $100-300 for each dress.   If you go over budget, consider covering the difference.  Because of the cost burden, remember to try to pick a look that can be worn again so your friends and family can get the most out of their purchase.
  • Be considerate.  These are probably some of your closest friends or family members, so be sure to consider their needs.  Will they be uncomfortable in a tight, form-fitting dress?  Will they mind if the dress is more revealing than they’re used to?  You may want to accommodate these preferences if they are reasonable.
  • Bridesmaid basics: style, color, fabric, and length.
  •
    • Style – Try to pick a universally flattering style that can fit all the body types of your maids well.  A-line bridesmaid dresses and Empire dresses, for example, are flattering on most figures.  But there are a variety of styles to choose from (like halter, one shoulder strap, pencil skirt, mermaid, and many more).  Consider your maids’ body types carefully when selecting style.
    • Color – The color of the bridesmaid dresses should be compatible with your gown and the overall theme and style of the wedding.  Platinum, silver, and paler pastels are trending right now.  But, other colors always seem to work on many people, like black, deep brown, dark green or blue, which can also be worn to many occasions aside from your wedding.
    • Fabrics – Depending on the season and setting of your wedding, your fabric choices will vary.  For example, light fabrics like chiffon and light satin may be too light for winter, while heavier fabrics like velvet may be too uncomfortable for summer weddings.  If you’re having an outdoor summer wedding, be sure to have breathable fabrics for your bridesmaids.
    • Length – Traditionally, if your gown is floor length, the bridesmaid dresses should also be long.  Of course, it’s your big day and you can make and break the rules!  Shorter lengths (just above or slightly below the knee) work wonderfully especially in casual and outdoor settings, while longer lengths can add elegance to a more formal or evening wedding.  Check out short and long looks bridesmaid dresses here for ideas.
  • Delegate.  Sick of micromanaging?  Let someone else do the legwork on this one. Do you have enough on your plate with the cake, flowers, invitations, and family headaches?  Try passing along the bridesmaid attire planning or execution to your maid of honor.  Alternatively, many brides opt to let their bridesmaids pick their own dresses after giving them some guidelines (i.e. color and length).  Other brides have their maids choose from a certain collection, offering freedom to choose their own style from several closely related looks that you’ve selected.
  • Make it a girls’ day out.  If your bridal party isn’t too large, it may be fun to have a shopping day with the girls so they can help you pick their dresses.  That way, you can blow off some steam before the big day, while getting something accomplished.  But, avoid this method if your bridal party is too large or if you think it would be otherwise stressful.

House of Wu’s Pretty Maids collection offers a wide selection of beautiful bridesmaid dresses to compliment your gown; brides can choose from more than 50 colors, and a range of sizes, fabrics, and lengths.  Pretty Maids also offers an array of accessories.  And just to make it even easier for you, Pretty Maids has several shipping options to meet your needs, including 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks.  You can view the bridesmaid dresses online catalog here.
